Out with the Old: From 2019-2024, JCARF supporters sent reparations funds each month through digital payment platforms to JCARF directly, and we distributed those funds to local BIPOC community members who applied via a waitlist.
This model served us well at the beginning and helped us to redistribute hundreds of thousands of dollars in reparations payments to East Jefferson County BIPOC residents. However, this proved to be unsustainable long term and we were left facing a challenge that all mutual aid groups must grapple with at some point: how do we facilitate the exchange of personal gifts across a wide network of community members?
Our solution: deepen our interconnectivity. Thus the WEB was created!
How it works: JCARF matches contributors (white folks) with recipients (BIPOC) in supported partnerships, with payments made directly to the recipients through a platform like Venmo, Zelle, cash, or check. JCARF organizers will coordinate and facilitate these pairings, while the funds flow directly from community member to community member. It’s simple, collaborative, community building, and most importantly, sustainable for the long-haul.
